At Underprotection we only use materials that are classified or certified sustainable. When selecting our materials, we aim to choose qualities that are as close to 100% pure as possible. This way, the item isn’t made of many different materials, making it easier to recycle at the end of the cycle.
We craft our products from both natural materials and synthetic materials from recycled sources. Many of our items are OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified and all our synthetic materials are GRS certified, while our natural materials are GOTS certified.

NATURAL MATERIALS
Natural materials are fibers that come from plants or animals, which are spun into yarns and woven or knitted into fabrics. We work with two main types: animal-based fibers, using only responsible wool, and plant-based fibers like TENCEL™ Lyocell and organic cotton. Natural fibers are popular for many reasons - they're more environmentally friendly, durable and provide great comfort.
TENCEL LYOCELL
TENCEL™ Lyocell is a regenerated cellulosic fiber produced by Lenzing. It's made from wood, a natural renewable raw material sourced from responsibly managed forests and plantations, and is manufactured using resource-efficient production methods with a low ecological impact.
TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers are naturally soft, smooth to the touch, and provide long-lasting comfort. They can be blended with various textile fibers like cotton, polyester, wool, and silk to enhance the look and feel of fabrics. TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers are known for their strength, excellent moisture absorption, and gentleness on the skin.
ORGANIC COTTON
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or harmful chemicals. Various certification organizations ensures that organic suppliers only use methods and materials allowed in organic production. Organic cotton is grown using farming methods that help capture CO2 in the soil. As a result, CO2 emissions are up to 94% lower compared to conventional cotton farming, and energy and water consumption are also reduced. We use GOTS-certified organic cotton, which meets strict environmental and social standards.
WOOL
Wool is a natural, breathable, and long-lasting material, which is the why we love it. It's very importnat to us that the wool we use is ethically sourced. We use two types of wool: recycled wool and RWS-certified wool. Recycled wool is made from old garments, saving resources and reducing waste. RWS-certified wool comes from farms that prioritize sheep welfare and guarantee mulesing-free production.
SYNTHETIC MATERIALS
Synthetic materials are fibers that are, usually formed through chemical processes. We only work with synthetic materials that come from recycled sources, be it polyester, nylon or elastane. Synthetic materials have many benefits including their durability and water resistance.
RECYCLED POLYESTER
We only recycled polyester that is GRS certified. Recycled polyester is considered a green choice in textiles because it uses 33% to 53% less energy compared to making new virgin polyester. Plus, it's made from recycled materials like plastic bottles, helping to keep waste out of landfills and oceans. It also produces fewer emissions than virgin polyester.
RECYCLED POLYAMIDE
We use Q-NOVA recycled polyamide, which is made from at least 99% regenerated raw materials that would otherwise have been wasted in the textile manufacturing industry. The fiber is made using a mechanical regeneration system, which does not involve using chemical solutions that would detract from the sustainability of the end product. This recycled polyamide makes incredibly strong lace and mesh fabrics that are perfect for beautiful underwear designs. Most of our recycled polyamide fabrics are GRS certified.
RECYCLED ELASTANE
To make our delicate lace fabrics more comfortable and stretchy, we use Roica Eco-Smart yarn, a GRS certified eco-stretch elastane. This yarn is made with over 50% recycled industrial waste from textile production. It adds stretch to our fabrics, supports Circular Economy principles and helps us create modern, responsibly made underwear designed for everyday comfort and wear.
GET TO KNOW THE CERTIFICATIONS
GRS Certification: The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification verifies a product is made with recycled materials. It means the product’s recycled parts have been checked and verified to ensure they’re truly recycled. This helps ensure that products are more environmentally friendly and meet recycling standards.
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100: OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is a label for textiles that have been tested to ensure they are free from harmful chemicals. This certification means the material is safe for your health and the environment. It covers everything from the yarn to the finished product, guaranteeing that each item with this label has passed strict safety tests.
GOTS Certification: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification ensures that textiles are made from organic fibers and produced in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible way. It covers every step of the process, from the organic farming of the cotton or other fibers to the final product. GOTS-certified products must meet strict criteria for organic content, chemical use, and fair labor practices, ensuring that both the environment and the people involved are treated well.
RWS Certification: The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) certification ensures that wool is sourced from farms that prioritize animal welfare and sustainable practices. It guarantees that sheep are well cared for, not subjected to harmful practices like mulesing, and that land management is environmentally responsible. In essence, RWS certification assures you that the wool is ethically sourced.
